National Administrative Professional Day
April 25, 2011
Everyone in the office should be celebrated. Office workers never seem to get the attention or respect they deserve. Administrative professional Day recognizes and celebrates the work of secretaries, administrative assistants, and other office professionals for their growing and diverse contributions to the workplace. Administrative Professional Day was originally organized in the year of 1952 as National Secretaries Week, through the work of Harry F. Klemfuss. Klemfuss recognized the importance and value of the position to a company or business. In 1998, the name of the holiday changed to better represent the full range of administrative positions. The name change was to keep pace with changing job titles and expanding responsibilities of today administrative workforce. Administrative Professionals Week is always the last full week of April.
Over the years, Administrative Professionals Week has become one of the largest workplace observances.
Although some people like to say that an assistant is “just assistant,” assistants end up working long hours to ensure that the company’s clients have the best possible experience when they are conducting business. For some administrative assistants their duties do not end once they clock out. Secretaries and administrative assistants perform a variety of administrative and clerical duties necessary to run an organization efficiently. They serve as information and communication managers for an office; plan and schedule meetings and appointments; organize and maintain paper and electronic files; manage projects; conduct research; and disseminate information by using the telephone, mail services, Web sites, and e-mail. They may also handle travel and guest arrangements.
